2 December 2007 The first 8-hour Photo Expedition of many to come was a hit!
We received rave reviews from all the participants along with future plans of coming to our next one (which by the way is tentative for March 30th 2008, pencil this into your calendar). Unfortunately Bob Talbot was called away to Hawaii for a Humpback Whale situation and was not able to join us. He did however donate the use of his Nautica inflatable to use as the scout boat. Thanks Bob! Chuck Davis was joining us but he was planning on showing up Monday morning (the day after the trip) and would've wondered where everyone was! Such is the life of Professional Photography! We started off with a beautiful sunrise set up with birds flocking to be in our photos. Once we were able to turn the corner of Point Pinos it was clear sky's with a bit of swelly seas. We were able to make it to Point Lobos with no problems then the wind came in. Risso's Dolphins were seen outside Carmel Bay and on the trip back up the coast we had Humpback Whales tail lobbing and breaching. What a wonderful day for lighting and learning. We have learned many things from our customers and with the next extended trip around the corner we will continue to critique the trip to the customers wishes. Don't forget we have 2 hour sunrise and pinniped/sea otter trips on Saturday's for the months of December and January. When all else fails and no whale watching boats can go out WE still can!

Press Release November 2, 2007
The Photo Expeditions idea originated with the cumulative vision of Bob Talbot, Danny Frank and Sarah Graham. With the combination of skills, as photographers, boat captain and business manager they envisioned bringing the best elements of photography, and the grandeur of Monterey Bay together by making it accessible from the beginner (learning how to take a good photograph )to the professional looking for that “special” photographic experience. The goal of Photo Expeditions is to provide that unique one-on-one experience to work with professional photographers and crew to give the beginner a starting point and the budding professional that special shot to add to their portfolio. The Captain and crew will focus on boat positioning and lighting as well as observe the animal’s behavior to prevent any stress that the boats presence may incur. Meanwhile the professional photographer will provide tips and pointers about shot set up, light metering and other techniques for capturing that one moment of time. The Photo Expeditions trip is geared towards individuals seriously interested in photography. Therefore space on each trip is limited which allows for plenty of room to move about the boat and each person has their “special spot” along the rail. A Photo Expeditions trip is unique from a regular whale watching trip in that with Photo Expeditions the priority is getting “the shot” and getting it “right” .The captain and crew will aim for finding the most active animals in the area and searching for surface behaviors. The Photo Expeditions trip will not generally stay with one group of animals but will spend enough time to capture the shot, and also spend time looking for that group of animals that will provide the best photo opportunity. The Photo Expeditions trip is unrushed allowing plenty of time to compose that perfect shot. The Photo Expeditions trip is flexible and offers a variety of trip options. We offer 2 hour sunrise and sunset trips focusing on light metering and capturing the natural beauty of Monterey Bay. There will also be 2 hour trips focusing on close to shore animals, Pinniped's and sea otters for example as well as 3-4 hour whale and dolphin trips. These trips are designed to meet the needs of all photographers. So you can sign up for the whole day to get the entire trip experience or pick and choose the elements you want to focus on at that time. Photo Expeditions is here to meet the needs of each of its photographers. So come aboard with Photo Expeditions and let us show you the marine life of Monterey Bay through the eye of a camera lens. |

What an exciting day! Wyland himself called us to charter the Sur Randy for a Sea Otter Expedition to collect photos for a new book that he will be publishing soon. We searched the Monterey area in the kelp and did not find any Sea Otters so we headed off to Moss Landing where Sea Otters can be seen rafting on a daily basis. Our Head Expedition Leader, Danny Frank, was assisting Wyland with lining up the lighting and helping the captain, Brian Cutting, with maneuvering the Sur Randy safely and respectfully around the Sea Otters. Long lens on and video camera in tow, we were able to help Wyland get some exciting behaviors and beautiful sunset photos. I had the honor of being the videographer for Wyland so that all areas of the boat and film types were covered. We wanted to send out a special thanks to Wyland for a great trip and memorable evening. For more information on Wyland visit his web site at www.wyland.com..
