 After immigrating to the United Sates, Capt. Gene Maly started sailing dinghies in San Diego, then larger boats in Los Angeles and Monterey, where he has lived since 1978.
Gene, has logged more than 75,000 ocean miles on various races, such as Puerto Vallarta Races and Ensenada Races to Mexico, Antigua Race Weeks in the Caribbean and Pacific Cups to Hawaii, King’s Cup in Thailand; racing on the California West Coast and Monterey Bay and won the overall Monterey Bay Championship in 1989; yacht charters and deliveries on the West Coast and Mexico. Originally from the landlocked Czech Republic, he dreamt of sailing the oceans after reading Jules Vernes’ books.
After qualifying for 50 ton Master’s license in 1994 he opened Carrera Sailing Charters on the Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey.
